Pastel     20″ x 16″

I’ve been very remiss lately, not posting much this month.   Still painting more than ever, but life keeps interfering, pulling me into mundane matters that need to be taken care of.

My sister asked me to do this painting.   I think I have done a painting for every one of her dogs.   People often give me very sentimental, but poor quality photos of their pets.   This is the way she remembers her dog, it’s a meaningful image to her.   When I know the pet I can fill in the blanks and put personality into the painting; when I don’t know them it’s more difficult to do this.

Acrylic and Pastel     20″ x 24″

Re-visiting Leo, the Archetypal energy of the King, the Clown and the Child.   Leos are natural leaders.   They are generous, courageous and loyal.   They are also self-expressive, creative and dramatic as they are driven by the need to creatively express themselves and be appreciated.   On the less positive side Leo can be prideful, demanding and even domineering.   The ruler of Leo is the Sun.

Another image of the cardinal water sign of Cancer.   In this image the focus is on the predominant symbols for this energy, the crab and the mother.

As I work on each of these paintings I feel that I am gaining another level of understanding of these symbols.   Aries is the energy of the individual, the warrior; Taurus is symbolized by the Bull, an apt image for material security and the good life as cattle and domesticated animals were central to the rise of civilization.   Gemini is the energy of the twins, of the double and therefore an apt symbol for the duality inherent in perception and information.  And Cancer is the energy of caring, mothering and the quirky sidestepping and need for a hard shell of the crab.

The ruler of Cancer is the Moon.

Bobcat Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Bobcat Cheyene Mountain Zoo

Pastels     8″ x 10″

I visited the zoo back in December.   It was too cold and there was lots of snow on the ground; the more exotic elephants and giraffes were kept snug in their indoor shelters.   That was okay because I was more interested in seeing examples of local animals, the wolves and moose and cats that live in the Rocky Mountains.   I took photos of this bobcat as he was enjoying the sunshine and the brisk air.

Bunny In My Back Yard

Bunny in my back yard

Pastels     8″ x 10″

I live on a cliff overlooking the city and am regularly visited by Mule Deer, rabbits and hawks.   Last night I watched two rabbits hoping, jumping and chasing one another in my back yard for the longest time.   I assume it was love play.   I wanted to capture them on my camera but because it was dusk and their coloring matched the grass they were playing in I could barely make them out myself, and my camera couldn’t pick them out at all.

This painting is based on some photos taken during the middle of a sunny day not long ago as the little guy rested in the grass just outside my doors.
